Reef Friendly Landscaping

Nearshore marine ecosystems in rural communities across Hawai‘i are facing growing threats from land-based pollution. Synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides commonly used in landscaping and farming runoff into waterways and degrade coral reefs. Studies have linked these chemicals to coral bleaching, fish kills, and algal blooms. While there is increasing awareness of reef-safe products, most outreach and training resources remain centralized in urban or resort areas.
